The BMW S70/2 engine was developed specifically for the McLaren F1, a supercar produced between 1992 and 1998. The McLaren F1 was designed to be the ultimate driving machine, and BMW was chosen to provide the powerplant. BMW's engineers worked closely with McLaren's design team to create a bespoke engine that would meet the demanding requirements of the car.

The result was the S70/2, a 6.1-liter V12 engine that was unlike anything else on the market. It was mounted longitudinally behind the driver, a unique configuration that helped to centralize the car's weight and improve handling. The engine was also highly advanced, featuring a DOHC valvetrain, four valves per cylinder, and Bosch Motronic M5.2 electronic fuel injection.

The S70/2 engine was widely praised for its smoothness, reliability, and performance, delivering 627 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. It helped to make the McLaren F1 one of the fastest and most capable supercars of its time, capable of reaching top speeds of over 240 mph.
